Big data storage is convenient

Recently, the team of academician Gu Min of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and the team of researcher Ruan Hao of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences used optical storage technology to propose a green, long-life, big data storage solution. Researchers use dual-beam technology to break through the limitations of optical diffraction, and for the first time prove that it is possible to write and read information points in a super-resolution size of up to 100 layers in three-dimensional space, and the capacity of a single disc can be as high as Pb, which is equivalent to the capacity of at least 10,000 Blu-ray discs. It is reported that under the impetus of this technology, the number of petabyte-level optical discs required to store a year's global data can be reduced by two orders of magnitude compared with hard disks, achieving the effect of "one to hundred".
"I've only taken a few photos, and my phone memory is full again." "My computer's hard drive is full, and I have to buy an external hard drive again...... Behind these "troubles" that we take for granted is the increasing demand for data storage. And these daily "little annoyances" are just the tip of the iceberg of data storage troubles. According to a white paper issued by a data storage professional organization, by 2025, the total amount of global data will increase from 33 zettabytes in 2018 to 175 zettabytes (zettabytes, 1 zettabyte is equal to 1 billion terabytes, that is, terabytes), and if you use the mainstream 1TB capacity mobile hard disk to install these data, at least 175 billion will need to be used. This is not only costly, but also has a short lifespan for data storage. Therefore, whether it is personal daily needs or industrial and agricultural production, it has long been urgent to develop green and secure storage technologies that can accommodate massive amounts of data.
Academician Gu Min introduced that taking the deep learning model GPT as an example, the dataset behind it, such as the total number of indexed web pages is as high as 5.8 billion, and the text size of the entire Internet is about 56Pb. The 3D nanophotonic storage developed by the research team can save storage space to the size of a computer, which greatly reduces the economic cost. In addition, in order to maintain the harsh operating environment of the database (e.g., constant temperature and humidity, magnetic and dust resistance), huge energy consumption needs to be generated. The photonic storage technology developed by the research team can reduce energy consumption by several orders of magnitude, and the lifespan can reach 50 to 100 years.
This game-changing achievement stems from the team's breakthrough in the limits of optical diffraction. For example, laser direct writing machine, optical microscopy technology, optical storage technology, etc., are all limited by the optical diffraction limit. Among the 125 most cutting-edge scientific questions published in the world published by Science magazine in 2021, the optical diffraction limit ranks first in the field of physics, and it is also one of the seven technical fields that will be focused on in the coming year in the latest release of Nature in 2024.
